Nutrition / Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic Medicine is a system of medicine that has been practiced for over a hundred years. Today, it is practiced by licensed Naturopathic Doctors (ND’s) who in many licensed states are considered primary health care providers. It takes a functional medicine approach to health, identifying the root cause of illness by understanding the biochemical and physiological imbalances in a person and uses natural therapies and lifestyle changes to support the body’s own ability to heal itself or prevent disease. Emphasis is placed on long-term healthy lifestyle changes/habits, disease prevention, and patient education.

ND’s take a detailed patient medical history to determine the root cause of illness for acute and chronic conditions. Treatment plans and recommendations are personalized to every patient for short or long-term care, as needed.

Common modalities used include: Clinical Nutrition (Vitamins and Minerals), Diet, Botanical Medicine (Western and Chinese herbs), Homeopathic Medicine, Lifestyle Counseling, and in some states Acupuncture, Chiropractic therapies, and Primary Care Medicine, including IV therapy/Injections.

Common conditions for consultations:

  • Mental / Emotional Health: Anxiety, Depression, Insomnia, Disordered eating
  • Women’s Health: Irregular & painful periods, PMS, Recurrent UTIs, Interstitial Cystitis, PCOS, Endometriosis, Hair loss/thinning, Menopause
  • Pregnancy: Preparation (supplementation & detoxification), Infertility, Pregnancy support (nutrition, blood sugar regulation, sleep, aches & pains), Postpartum depression
  • Infant / Toddler / Teen Nutrition: Breastfeeding support, Formula choices, Introducing solids to infants, Digestive issues, Food sensitivities, Picky eaters
  • Endocrine / Auto-immune Conditions: Blood sugar dysregulation, Thyroid & Hashimoto’s, Lupus, Rheumatoid arthritis, MS, etc.)
  • Digestive Disorders: Reflux, Ulcers, Stones, IBS, Constipation, Celiac, Crohn’s, Colitis
  • Skin Conditions: Acne, Dry Skin, Eczema, Psoriasis, Rosacea, Rashes
  • Musculoskeletal: Sprains/Strains, Surgery Healing, Osteoarthritis / Osteoporosis

Minimally invasive treatments are often the first-line approach with great emphasis on connecting the mental, emotional, and physical aspects to obtain optimal health. The focus is on educating the patient on illness prevention, healthy diet, and lifestyle habits, during all interactions. The end goal is improved overall health and well-being with long-term maintenance and positive results.

Naturopathic Consultations:
Currently Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) are not licensed in New York State; however, most practicing ND’s maintain an active license in another state or province. In NY, ND’s are not able to diagnose or treat medical conditions as primary care providers, but provide in-depth nutrition and lifestyle consultation services based on their high level of education, credentials, and work experience. ND’s are not able to bill to insurance in New York, but some health care programs (I.e. flex spending) may be eligible, please consult with your provider. At Slope Wellness, we partner with Shaila Schwartz, ND who provides phone consultations for clients from any location, due to her vast amount of experience practicing from various locations.Talk to Shaila before your first visit with a 10 Minute FREE phone consult.
